Coronavirus: will universities returning cause a second wave?
Universities across the UK are being urged to remove face-to-face teaching to prevent a second wave of coronavirus. The Academics Union said that over a million students moving around the country could be a ‘recipe for disaster’. Even experts are agreeing that universities are not prepared enough and risk becoming the “care homes of the second wave”. However, this opinion isn’t shared by universities who have worked tirelessly to offer a safe place for students. There is no doubt that the responsibility for safeguarding teachers and students will be extremely challenging. Especially when this year is seeing a larger number of students going to university. In contrast, many people share the view that students deserve to get the education they have worked so hard for.
Students back at Uni
The daily recorded cases of coronavirus in the UK is the highest now since early June. Many people worry that these new statistics could be a warning of things to come. We have already seen tougher restrictions put in place this week with the ‘rule of six’ limit on social gatherings. However, the rule does not apply to schools, universities, workplaces, weddings, funerals, or organised team sports. This news has been a shock to many as the fear of high volumes of people mixing could lead to another lockdown. And even though testing is increasing, there is no way of knowing what will happen when students mix on mass.
Coronavirus Government guidelines
The government says it is confident that universities are well prepared for the return of students and the fight against coronavirus. They believe there are enough measures in place such as social distancing, reduced travel, and staggered teaching to reduce numbers. With these precautions in place, there is hope that students will be able to enjoy university life as much as possible.
