Homeless students on the rise UK
The cost of living crisis has hit rock bottom and homeless students are on the rise in the UK. Homelessness in England has soared by 11% with over 74,000 households in England becoming homeless between January and March 2022. And it’s likely that more students will struggle to pay higher food and energy costs alongside their rent. Throughout the UK universities are being looked at to prevent homelessness among their current and recent students. Universities have stepped up their efforts to target money and mental health support where it is needed the most.
Hidden homelessness
A survey by the National Union of Students in Scotland reported that 12% of students had experienced homelessness since starting their studies. These worrying figures are rising to one in three among estranged and care-experienced students. There are also hidden homeless students who are sofa surfing to keep a roof over their heads. So, for those who don’t have the right support, the results can be catastrophic.
Scary statistics
Recent surveys show a huge 11% of students said they were accessing food banks, up from 5% in January. Not only this but half the students said they were cutting back on food in general. Also, three out of four students said they couldn’t afford learning materials because of the budget squeeze, and one in five said they were unable to buy toiletries. The survey questioned 3,417 students across the country this June.
