New Covid restrictions – will Christmas be cancelled?
The UK has been uncertain what the new covid restrictions will be and if it would involve cancelling Christmas. However, Boris Johnson has said that people should not be cancelling Christmas due to the new Omicron variant of Covid. But where does this leave us – should we be mixing or keeping apart for the sake of the greater good? Here we take a look at how the new Covid omicron rules will affect your Christmas and New Year’s Eve plans.
Hospitality hit again
As of December 10th, new rules state that face coverings are compulsory in most public indoor venues. And the Prime Minister also advised ‘those who can’ to work from home from December 13th. So, with these new restrictions, the number of people dining out across the UK has fallen dramatically. Also, according to restaurant industry figures the hospitality industry is taking a huge hit over the festive season. The nation is already under Plan B’s work-from-home guidance from the Prime Minister. As well as seeing the introduction of mandatory Covid passports in large venues and the extension of mask rules. However, it seems in a bid to save Christmas many people are cancelling plans to make sure they don’t test positive for Covid before the big day.
Should students be travelling home for Christmas?
Currently, there are no plans preventing seeing family for Christmas, but everyone is encouraged to take lateral flow tests regularly. In the lead up to Christmas, many people are taking extra precautions so that they can see loved ones over the Christmas holidays. We don’t know yet if the rules will change or when. But the Prime Minister has said that the measures will be reviewed on January 5th and will automatically expire on January 26.
