Students Union – what do they do?
Many people wonder what the purpose of a students union is and how they benefit the everyday student. Well, it works in a very similar way to a workplace union. The students union campaigns for the rights of its members (the students) on key issues, bringing them to the attention of your university. Every students union will have a dedicated officer to represents students on a range of issues such as education, welfare, disability, diversity, the environment and much more. In short, they are a voice for all students to help make a change.
Help outside of the classroom
Students union will have several officers who help organise sports and societies on campus. They will be your first port of call to help find out what’s on offer. The students union organises day trips, activities and nights out during Freshers’ week and throughout the rest of the year. They are also very helpful with setting up new clubs or activities and can help guide you in the right direction.
A listening ear, and some good advice
Your students union are great at advising on students’ rights when it comes to things like student accommodation and private landlords. They can also offer individual representation if there are any issues with your university. The union are great for being a listening ear, but they are also there for impartial advice, with a key interest in your well-being.
