- Give notice to your landlord (if renting). This can be done by letter or email, just make sure you have provided the requires amount of notice and included a move out date.
- Confirm the date of your move. This will affect every other part of your move, so make sure you have this information before anything else. Whether your renting or buying – make sure you’ve spoken to your solicitor or landlord and confirmed in writing the exact date (or dates if spread out over a few days).
- Get moving costs. We are all aware of the stresses of moving, none more so than transport. Make sure fi friends are helping that you confirm near to move in and that you always have a contingency. It’s also worthwhile getting a range of moving quotes from one-man removals to larger house removals.
- Contact utility suppliers. One of the most common mistakes is not organising new providers and notifying them of new occupancy of a property or leaving one. Both ends are important and providing a reading is a MUST to avoid any nasty bills.
- Pack up and organise boxes. The packing of boxes is usually the most time-consuming part. But, it’s one of the most important so make sure you have enough boxes and bubble wrap. Keep a marker pen to hand so you can label the boxes along with some heavy-duty packing tape.
- Pay Bills. The most common to avoid, yet the most important. Make sure that before you move you settle old bills and accounts. They have a way of tracing you to a new address! You can also set up a change of address with the Post Office so you can have all your post forwarded for 3,6 or 12 months if you don’t have time to notify everyone of your new address.
- Moving day box. This is genius and the best tip of all. Keep your kettle, tea, coffee, plate, cutlery, tea towel, toilet roll, biscuits, fold away chair, laptop and chargers in one easy to reach box. This will keep spirits high when your feeling tired!
- Take the rest of the night off. You’ve exhausted your moving house checklist now it’s time to find a local takeaway, order something heart-warming and put your feet up, you’ve earned it.
