Coronavirus – should I go to university this year?
As we ease from spring into a less restricted summer, coronavirus and university system are hot topics. Although education has been paused in recent months, we are fast approaching the new term in September. For many, this time should be filled with excitement of sharing accommodation with soon to be friends. However, Coronavirus has changed the way we live daily, and many are u uncertain of what the future holds. We can now start to see light at the end of the coronavirus tunnel, with a rental boom.
University offer deadline
The deadline for students to accept university offers for the new academic year passed this week. For many students it was a big decision – even more so this year, with the outbreak of Coronavirus. The decision has been made harder knowing that the usual lectures are due to take place online instead of at university. Not only does this affect learning, but it makes socialising extremely difficult.
Will universities be open as normal in September?
There are 137 universities in the UK, and 89 out of 92 of them will provide some in-person teaching next term. This will form part of a “blended approach” to teaching and learning, with many universities announcing that lectures will be given online. If you would like more information, contact individual universities, or check their websites to find out what they have decided.
Will universities charge full tuition fees?
The government says university students in England will still have to pay full tuition fees even if their courses are taught online in the autumn. Although many students are unhappy about this, with some starting petitions for lost teaching in a parliamentary debate. The maximum UK university tuition fee is £9,250 a year, which is covered by a student loan. However, international students may pay more. Scottish and European Union students pay no tuition fees for attending a university in Scotland.
Student Accommodation
Student accommodation costs can vary, depending on where and how you are looking to rent. Some live in shared houses, others in halls and studio apartments. Coronavirus has been challenging for many but as the new term approaches, there landlords and letting agents are working hard to ensure safe rentals are provided.
