Winter lockdown
Universities have been in the firing line alongside schools in the recent decision to impose a winter lockdown. Although tough restrictions are in place, the fact that education has been allowed to continue has been met with frustration. Many believe keeping England’s schools and universities open will lead to another lockdown. The National Education Union (NEU) believe this ‘half measure’ approach will almost certainly lead to further lockdown measures. There has even been a social media storm with the hashtag #CloseSchoolsNOW trending on Twitter. In the north of England, COVID-19 infections have been at their highest and school attendance at its lowest. These figures only echo NEU calls for schools in their regions to close.
Lives on hold during winter lockdown
Boris Johnson posted a heartfelt message earlier this week. It stated: ‘Young people have put their lives on hold. They are sacrificing school lessons, exams, and time with friends, to protect our NHS and save lives. We are now doing everything we can to support them to get back to school safely and be reunited with their teachers and friends.’ The government wants to keep schools and colleges open so that children can keep progressing towards exam. Students are also feeling the effects, having already had exams results based on general scores and lessons being moved online.
Surviving another lockdown
It is without doubt an incredibly difficult time for everyone across the UK, however students are also suffering. Many are unsure if they can return home for Christmas and could face this festive time alone. Over the next few weeks be sure to check in with loved ones and remember to show kindness wherever possible. This is a traumatic time for so many, but it’s how we respond to these turbulent times that will help get us through together.
