Freshers week – could this see a soar in Covid cases?
Freshers week is the highest priority on the social calendar for new students, but will this year look any different from last year? The push from the government was to ensure as many students as possible have been double jabbed before the return to studying. However, the union has written to Education Secretary Gavin Williamson warning of the risks returning to university could cause. He states that the chaos seen at universities last year will be repeated unless strict measures are in place to protect staff and students.
Health and safety
The government has also called on universities to make face makes compulsory for students and staff. They have also asked for students and teachers to have access to free PCR tests. These strict measurements have been put in place to help minimise covid cases. Last year, the strict rules caused chaos for students and burned-out staff, who worked incredibly hard to maintain standards. This year, the union has warned that universities are especially vulnerable to further outbreaks. And with more than 1 million students traveling across the country to live and study away from home, the threat is real.
UEA Freshers Week
Freshers Week at the UEA is starting this week, Monday 20th September 2021. Based in the heart of campus, teams, and departments from across the university and the Students’ Union will be holding drop-in sessions. They will be on hand to answer any questions you might have and will be running a number of workshops. These are a great way to meet like-minded people and try new things! There are also a whole host of social events that are aimed at creating fun experiences to meet new people. Take a look at the UEA event calendar here.
