Jury duty for Students
In the UK, there is no general exemption from jury duty for university students. If a student is registered to vote, they are eligible to be selected for jury service like any other eligible citizen. However, there are some circumstances where a student may be excused or deferred from jury duty.
Judy duty exemptions
One reason a university student may be excused from jury duty is if they have exams or assessments scheduled during the time of the trial. In such cases, the student can provide evidence of their academic commitments to the court and request to be excused. It is at the discretion of the court to grant the excusal, and it’s not guaranteed.
Additionally, a student may be excused from jury duty if they have caring responsibilities. This can be for children, elderly, or disabled family members, or are a full-time carer. In such cases, the student can provide evidence of their caring responsibilities and request to be excused. Again, it is up to the court to decide whether to grant the excusal.
Defer jury duty
It’s possible for students to defer their jury service they have planned travel or other important commitments. The court may grant such a request, but it is not a guaranteed exemption. However, failure to attend jury service without a valid reason can result in a fine or even imprisonment. So, it’s important to follow the proper procedures for requesting an excusal or deferral.
