Believe it or not, students who use advanced online search strategies have higher grades at university…
Don’t assume you know it all!
It’s easy to become complacent when it comes to googling, as for the majority of us it’s become second nature. But putting time into how you search can make all the difference to getting the results you want. Most commonly, students search for isolated facts instead of branching out into more queries using more search tabs. There are so many unused tabs such as news, books, finance, and more, there really is a whole world to be opened up.
Take your time
The term less haste more speed defiantly applies to Google. Most commonly, when students are in a rush it’s tempting to throw anything into search and hope for the best. But if you take the time to think about the best way to describe the query, you’re asking then the results will be more refined. Studies have shown that students spend 90 seconds or less viewing each website and searched a new topic every four minutes. Now that might sound impressive, but it highlights the inefficiency of the original query – as they’re not returning the right results.
Check your results further
It’s so tempting to just click the first few results and forget about the rest. However, this can discard huge opportunities for more detailed information. Check the remainder of page 1 and go to page 2 if needed. Remember, the results can only be as good as the accuracy of the original query.
