Student laptop – which one is right for me?
Choosing a good student laptop is an important part of university, but how do you know which one to buy? It can be a minefield out there with all of the different hardware packages, so we’ve put together the top laptops for every budget and need. You could pay anything up to £1200, but remember just like with most things, you get what you pay for.
How to pick a laptop
Make a list before you go into the shop and stick to it. Try to avoid getting dazzled by flashy features and chose one based on needs not just pretty design. Here a good starting point of things to remember:
- Set a budget and stick to it. When you’re in the throes of a convincing sales pitch it can be easy to get carried away.
- Think about longevity. Are you likely to be using the laptop daily and for a large chunk of time? There’s no point buying a laptop that’s half the cost of another if it ends up lasting half the time.
- Focus on spec v price to find the best compromise. Laptops need regular software updates so choosing one that has a poor spec could cause you trouble later down the line.
- Consider the screen size you ideally want, as not every laptop comes in every size. Some are designed to be more compact while others focus on size and power.
